Maple Bass opened it’s 2016 fishing season at the Desplaines River coming out of Big Basin…24 Maple members braved the cold and windy weather and the cold front with strong north winds shut down the fish with only 4 fishermen catching more than one keeper…1st place went to Ed Trevio with 3 fish weighing 5.82 lbs and Ed also caught the Big Bass weighing 3.05 lbs…2nd place went to Mike Utermark with 3 fish at 5.37 lbs and 3rd place Frank Spacil weighed in 2 keepers at 3.62 lbs nosing out the 2 keepers of Joe Barthelt’s by a scant .02 of a lb…Joe’s weight was 3.60 !!…there were 6 other Maple Bassers that weighed in one fish each…Bob Valiska led the one fish crew with a 2.46 lber…Nick Martens(1.79), Ken Brown(1.71), Greg Waldon(1.61), John Kasper(1.34) and Kevin Voss(1.28) rounded out the fish catchers…so that means there were 14 others who got skunked with the help of the severe cold front…hopefully the April 3rd Cal Sag tourney will bring better weather and help the fish catching !!!
