I fished my first bass tournament with Maple Bass Masters of Illinois on March 19th, 1977 at Lake of Egypt in Marion, Illinois. I won first place with a six fish limit that included a 5 lb. 15 oz. kicker. At 28 years-old I was on top of the world until a grizzled old veteran named Ray came up to me after the weigh-in and told me ” Hey kid, don’t think it’s always going to be this easy. Bass fishing is tough.” It turns out he was right.
I have served Maple Bass as recording secretary and corresponding secretary for eighteen years and wrote or edited the club’s newsletter for nine or ten years. I taught writing for over three decades at Triton College. So when our great webmaster Zak also known as Millertime asked me to write a fishing blog I told him I would think about it and maybe give it a try.
I have been in two teaching clubs Maple and Woodhaven Lunkerbusters Bass Club. I have fished multiple money circuits including: Team Supreme circuit on Mississippi Pool 13, BFL-FLW circuit in Wisconsin, BASS Weekend Anglers in the Iowa circuit and the Wisconsin circuit, and the Illinois BASS Federation circuit. I have made every Maple 8 man or 6 man team for the IBF Tournament since the first 1992 one on Rend Lake.
My goal in this blog is to make the readers better and more consistent fishermen. As a result I expect to be a better fisherman myself. A teacher can only become better by being a student of fishing himself. I have some direction from the webmaster Zak and my mentor Leo: I welcome input from all readers. We will see where this blog leads us. bluebass
If Dave S gets his new bearings on his trailer, we will produce our first entry on Braidwood tomorrow. I will try a new Browning fiberglass rod made for crank baits and rattle traps. I will throw only reaction baits and remind myself I am on a summer not winter pattern. Last year on the club Braidwood tournament with Greg W I caught my largest bass on a white Lunker Lure Buzz Bait on the hot side.
